California Adoption Search

The Search Guru

My name is Colleen Buckner and I am an adoptive mom that found my daughter's birth family in 1994. Since reuniting my daughter with her birth family I have reunited over a thousand other families separated by relinquishment and adoption. I am very well known in California as an experienced professional searcher and adoption community volunteer. I am also an activist for open records.

For several years I served as a volunteer support group leader and board member for Post Adoption Center for Education and Research (PACER). PACER is a post adoption support and services group in the Northern California area that provides educational information and monthly support group meetings for adoptees, birth relatives and adopted relatives. I was the facilitator for several search workshops sponsored by PACER. I wrote a monthly column in the PACER newsletter on search and reunion stories and searching techniques that were reprinted with permission in several other adoption community newsletters.

I am a member of the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

I am a member of the American Adoption Congress (AAC) and have served as a volunteer as a State Representative for their organization. I have attended many of their conferences that are educational and enlightening.

I am a member of the Washington Adoption Reunion Movement (WARM).

I am a member of the California Genealogical Society (CGS).

For several years I was a volunteer site manager for the International Soundex Reunion Registry (ISRR) for their annual registration of people in the adoption community seeking biological family members.

From 1998 to December of 2004 I was a volunteer moderator on the internet for the adopting.org and adoption.com websites. I posted over 10,000 messages in response to adoptees and birth family seeking searching advice and wrote several articles for their internet library resource.

As a member of an activist adoption network I picketed Vital Records in San Francisco to make a statement about how wrong it is to conceal original birth certificates from adopted people.

My daughter and I appeared on a San Francisco television morning news program to talk about the emotional impact of adoption search and reunion.

My daughter's birthmother, our daughter and I spoke several times to groups of pre-adoptive parents in the San Francisco Bay Area about an adult adoptee's need for search and reunion as an accepted part of the plan for parenting an adoptee.
